BEAT THE CAR SALESMAN, with its five-step car-buying system, was authored by consumer advocate and former car salesman Michael Royce.

In 1996, Michael self-published the first edition of his book. Sold in stores nationwide, the book was an immediate success and the first printing quickly sold out.

In 1997, Michael updated and expanded his book and the newly-revised edition was published by Avon Books (an imprint of HarperCollins), the world's largest publisher of mass-market paperbacks.
In 2002, a handy pocket digest edition of BEAT THE CAR SALESMAN arrived in stores. Published by American Media Inc, this little book was available at Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target stores - and quickly disappeared from store shelves.
